General Services

  • APPOINTMENTS/DROP-OFFS/EMERGENCIES/FEES

Our patients are seen in the following order:  emergencies, appointments, walk-ins.  We will do our best to honor your appointment time; however, if there is a patient involved in an emergency situation, we will need to address the needs of that patient first.

Walk-ins are certainly welcome, but please be advised that there is an urgent care fee of $81.50.

If you are dropping off your pet for the day for medical care or a surgical procedure, we ask that you are here no later than 9:00 a.m.  This allows the staff and doctors to assess your pet's needs and begin medical care/treatment more quickly.

  • BEHAVIORAL MEDICINE

Illness doesn't always have a physical cause. We are well versed in animal behavior and can help determine the cause of such disorders as separation anxiety and obsessive behavior, and then develop a treatment regimen for the client.

  • BLOOD TRANSFUSIONS

We maintain a supply of blood for all types of pets in case of emergency. The blood is collected from donor pets that live with their owners, and all blood is carefully screened for disease.

  • DENTAL CARE

Regular professional cleaning is important to maintaining your pet's teeth. We use modern and safe ultrasonic scalers to clean each tooth thoroughly - above and below the gum line.

Dental technicians polish teeth to create a smooth, lustrous tooth surface more resistant to plaque buildup. Fluoride treatments help strengthen enamel and reduce tooth sensitivity.

By utilizing our digital dental xray system, we can find problems that may not be aparent above the gum line.

Advanced dental care is available by referral including root canals, caps and braces.

Save yourself an extra trip by filling you pet's prescription while you are here for an appointment.

Please call 24 hours in advance for a medication refill.

We stay up to date on the most current pain managment protocols and medications and can taylor make a specific pain managment program for your individual pet.

  • RADIOLOGY

Radiology – or X-rays – help our veterinarians evaluate musculo-skeletal, cardiovascular(cardiopulmonary), gastrointestinal, reproductive and urinary systems.

In the spring of 2008, we upgraded our radiology capabilities to digital radiology.  Our Sound Technologies Digital Radiology (DR) system utilizes very high resolution radiographic images that are generated and stored by computer.  These images can be burned onto CD's or transmitted on the internet anywhere in the world for evaluation or consultation.

Our DR System also has the capability for our veterinarians to do virtual surgery via our Orthoplan Software.  This software allows us to plan an orthopedic procedure on a computer screen, utilizing planning and measuring tools and performing virtual surgery utilizing cut/paste functions.  These computer images are saved and utilized for planning and performing the actual surgical procedure.

Our clients can also access their pet's xray digital images on line.  To view your pet's images on the web go to www.vetpacs.com and enter your pet's access code.

  • ADULT STEM-CELL THERAPY

Stem Cells are your pet's own natural healing cells that help regenerate inured tissues.

These cells are capable of differentiating into a variety of tissue types, including:  tendon, ligament, bone, cartilage, smooth & cardiac muscle, liver, and others.  Our veterinarians are able to harvest these adult stem cells from your pets body fat.  These harvested fat cells are sent to a special lab in California where they are processed for stem cell treatment.  Within 48 hours of collection, your pet's own regenerative stem cells are returned to us for immediate use for your pet.

VSRC (VetStem Regenerative Cell) therapy produces more normal and complete healing because it aides the body's natural healing process.  The use of VSRC therapy has been used successfully for osteoarthritis, as well as soft tissue orthopedic issues.

Dr. Smith is a Credentialed Veterinarian who trained to collect and administer stem cell regenerative material to dogs and cats for the treatment of osteoarthritis.

Surgical Services

  • GASTROPEXY

GDV or Gastric Dilatation and Volvulus is a life threatening disorder most commonly seen in large, deep-chested dogs.  The term refers to a gas-filled stomach that then twists upon itself.  It is a medical emergency that requires surgery to correct.  Untreated GDV is fatal.

We perform Prophylactic Laparoscopic Assisted Gastropexy surgery as a preventative measure against gastric volvulus.  The primary goal of a Gastropexy surgery is to suture or "tack" the stomach to the abdominal wall.  By offering this procedure as a Minimally Invasive Procedure, most patients are able to go home the same day as surgery.  If you have any questions about GDV or Gastropexy surgery, please feel free to ask our doctors.

Dr. Smith was featured recently on a Fox 5 TV story, documenting the Lap Assisted Gastropexy procedure on one of our young patients.  Please visit the link to learn more about this important life saving procedure:

  • LAPAROSCOPY

High-tech fiber optics permit direct visual examination of your pet’s abdominal cavity without the need for a large surgical incision.

Diagnostic laparoscopy is used to view the surface of most abdominal organs and selectively biopsy lesions.  This allows for more accurate diagnosis and treatment of various abdominal diseases and disorders.

Laparoscopy allows many patients to be treated in a minimally invasive fashion.  Smaller incisions often mean less pain and quicker recovery for our patients.  We now offer laparoscopic assisted surgical procedures for ovariohysterectomies (spays), cystic or urethreal calculi (bladder or urethral stones),  cryptorchid (retained testicle) surgery and many others.  Laparoscopy can also be useful as a minimally invasive method for cancer staging.

Dr. Smith performs Laparoscopic-Assisted Gastropexies in at-risk large, deep chested dogs.  Gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV) is a life threatening emergency in large breed dogs, where their stomach twists and expands causing them to go into shock.  Their condition rapidly deteriorates and it is fatal if left untreated.  A gastropexy procedure is the only universally accepted method to prevent GDV.

  • LAPAROSCOPIC SPAYS

We are now proud to offer Laparoscopic Spay or Ovariohysterectomy (OVH) Surgery as an alternative to traditional spay surgery.

Laparoscopci Spays are performed through two tiny incisions in the abdomen, typically 3/16" in size.  The procedure is performed with magnified views of the organs allowing for greater precision.  The ovarian ligament is carefully sealed and cut, rather than torn, utilizing a special high-tech vessel sealing (LigaSure) device.

Laparoscopic spays offer patients up to 65% less pain, minimall recovery time and less trauma than traditional spays.

To learn more about this new alternative to traditional spay surgery, please visit:  www.lapspay.com

  • LASER SURGERY

Lasers are a minimally invasive alternative to traditional surgery.

Lasers replace scalpels in many procedures, and are useful for a wide range of conditions, such as cyst, tumor, and wart removal, and can even be used in declawing.

Laser procedures result in less pain; less bleeding and less swelling.

They reduce risk of infection and result in less post-operative discomfort.

We perform all of our feline declaw procedures with CO2 lasers, allowing our patients to leave the hospital 24 hours after the proceure.

  • SURGERY

We offer the most advanced surgical techniques and technology.

All patients are carefully screened for safety, and anesthetics are specifically tailored to your pet.

Surgical services and facilities include: fully trained veterinary and technical staff to ensure the safest, most efficient, state-of-the-art procedures for your pet; heated surgery tables for greater comfort; advanced sterilization techniques; ECG and oxygen saturation monitors; intensive after surgery care and full preanesthetic blood testing.

  • TIBIAL TUBEROSITY ADVANCEMENT

The Cranial Cruciate Lligament (CCL) is one of two ligaments that cross inside the knee joint.  When this ligament tears, the joint becomes unstable and painful.

Tearing of this ligament is one of the most common causes of rear limb lameness in dogs.  Dogs with this injury suddenly show lameness on a rear limb, or are non-weight bearing, or both. Studies show that up to 50% of dogs with CCL rupture on one leg will develop the same problem on the opposite leg sometime in the future.  The most effective way to decrease this percentage is early surgical repair of the first leg to allow for even weight distribution.  Weight loss is another key element in preventing this injury in many patients.

Tibial Tuberosity Advancement (TTA) is a new surgical technique that has been developed to repair this type of injury.  Compared to other geometry modifying procedures, this surgery is considered less invasive, has fewer serious complications and has a quicker recovery time.  TTA involves an osteotomy (a cut made into the bone) in the non-weight bearing portion of the tibia, just behind the tibial tuberosity.  The tibial tuberosity is advanced to align the patellar tendon perpendicular to the tibial plateau slope.  This new alignment eliminates the need for a CCL and results in a stable joint.  Most patients are weight bearing in 24-48 hours after surgery, and the recovery time is typically about three months.

Please call Dr. Smith to discuss this procedure further.
